Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye/Red Eye)

Conjunctivitis can be highly contagious. Most patients are not aware of the type of pink eye/red eye they have and risk infecting others. There are 3 main types of conjunctivitis, all of which we are equipped to treat on-site.

The Symptoms of Conjunctivitis

You may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Thick, yellow discharge that crusts over the eyelashes (particularly after a night’s sleep)
  • Burning sensation
  • Itchy eyes
  • Blurred vision
  • Redness – white of the eye and inner eyelid

What Causes Conjunctivitis?

Conjunctivitis can be caused by several different factors. They include:

  • Viruses (viral conjunctivitis)
  • Bacteria (bacterial conjunctivitis)
  • Environmental: Dust, smoke, pollen, etc
  • Irritants: Chlorine from pools, shampoo, makeup, etc
  • Allergies, including seasonal
How Do You Treat Conjunctivitis?

Treatment will depend on the cause of your conjunctivitis. After the Optometrist has completed an eye exam to determine the cause, they will likely advise one of the following treatments:

  • Antibiotics – Eye drops, oral medication, or medical ointments
  • Antihistamines – Eye drops or oral medication

Time and good hygieneViral Conjunctivitis [LINK: About Your Eyes Conjunctivitis] is much like the common cold and must run its due course.   Bacterial conjunctivitis is the highly contagious form of conjunctivitis, good personal hygiene and avoiding contact with others is recommended.
