What is Digital Eye Strain?

Quite simply put, digital eye strain is the physical discomfort you can experience after prolonged periods in front of a digital screen (2 or more hours).

Digital eye strain is typically experienced when using devices such as tablets, desktop computers, laptops, or smartphones.

What Can You Do to Prevent It Digital Eye Strain?

There are a few easy changes you can make to your daily routines to reduce the strain on your eyes during digital screen exposure. They include:

    • Keep Your Devices At A Certain Distance – Known as the Resting Point of Accommodation (RPA). This is the distance your eyes need to focus comfortably. The average distance is 31 inches for most people.
    • Prescription and Nonprescription Eyeglasses – Specifically designed for assisting your eyes when viewing content on screens. Their main purpose is to filter out the harsh blue light of digital screens.   Blue light is the wavelength of light directly about ultraviolet light.   We are now learning that prolonged exposure to blue light has harmful consequences to our retinas.  Optometrists have partnered with lens companies to develop special “blue blocking”  coatings for our ophthalmic lenses to help protect our patients eyes.   Please ask our doctors or staff about this technology when in our clinic.  They can also have an anti-reflective (AR) coating to reduce the glare caused by digital devices and surrounding surfaces.  
    • Regular Eye Exams – In a report by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), it was recommended that heavy computer users have regular eye exams. This includes children.
    • Use Proper Lighting – When you use your digital devices the ambient lighting should be approximately half as bright as that typically found in most offices. Excessively bright light exacerbates digital eye strain.
    • Minimize Glare – Glare from walls and finished surfaces, as well as the reflection from digital screens, can contribute to eye strain.
    • Adjust Your Digital Device Screen Settings – The best color combination for your eyes is black text on a white background. It is also recommended to have your display text be 3 times the size that you can read from your normal viewing position.
