We Can Diagnosis & Treat Your Dry Eye Symptoms
Did you know that over 30% of Canadians suffer from dry eye symptoms? And in Alberta’s dry, prairie climate, this number is estimated to be much higher.
There are various types of dry eye, with varying causes and symptoms. Some patients will experience chronic dry eye symptoms, while others will only suffer from mild dry eyes. Ultimately, dry eyes result from the body’s inability to create enough tears to lubricate the eyes or are unable to produce tears capable of lubricating the eyes.
We can help alleviate your symptoms. Schedule an appointment to get personalized dry eye care.
Common Signs of Dry Eye
Dry eye symptoms typically affect both eyes, and may include:
- Persistent dryness
- Chronic tearing
- Blurry vision
- Mucus discharge around your eyes
- Light sensitivity
- Stinging or burning sensation
- Red eyes and possibly eyelids
- Gritty, sandy feeling in your eyes
Diagnosing Dry Eyes
An eye exam is necessary to properly diagnose dry eyes. Dry eye symptoms are often similar to other ocular conditions, so patients can benefit a formal diagnosis. Our optometrist will assess your overall eye health during your eye exam, including looking for any foreign bodies or infections that may be the culprit behind your symptoms.
A Treament Plan
Designed for Your Eyes
After your eye exam is complete, we will guide your course of treatment. Each patient’s therapy will vary as it is dependent on the cause and what stage of your dry eyes.
Your treatment plan may include:
- iLux (in-office thermal treatment)
- Expression (in-office) to unblock eyelid glands
- Over-the-counter lubricating eye drops, gels, or ointments
- Prescription anti-inflammatory drops, gels, or ointments
- Insertion of punctal plugs to slow tear drainage
- Anti-inflammatory medications
- Lid hygiene products or hot compress pads
- Surgery (for more extreme cases)
