Imagine waking up and seeing clearly—no more fumbling for glasses or reaching for contact lens solution. That can be a reality with LASIK, a popular laser vision correction procedure that has helped millions of people around the world reduce or even eliminate their dependence on glasses and contacts.

In Canada, LASIK typically costs between $2,000 and $3,000 per eye, depending on the clinic and technology used. While the procedure may seem like a significant investment, many find the long-term convenience and potential savings well worth it. Here’s what you need to know about LASIK, from how it works to whether it might be the right choice for your vision needs.

What Is LASIK?

LASIK (short for Laser-Assisted in situ Keratomileusis) is a type of refractive eye surgery that reshapes the cornea—the clear front part of the eye—so that light is properly focused onto the retina. This correction can significantly improve vision for people with nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism.

The procedure is quick—usually around 20 minutes for both eyes—and offers minimal downtime. Most people experience improved vision within a day or 2.

How Does LASIK Work?

LASIK is a 2-step process:

  1. Creating the flap: A femtosecond laser creates a thin flap on the surface of the cornea. This flap is gently lifted to expose the underlying corneal tissue.
  2. Reshaping the cornea: An excimer laser is then used to reshape the cornea with incredible precision, removing microscopic amounts of tissue to correct your vision. The flap is then carefully repositioned, where it begins to heal immediately without stitches.

Because both lasers are computer-guided and highly accurate, LASIK is considered a safe and effective option for many people looking for long-term vision correction.

How Much Does LASIK Cost in Canada?

In Canada, the cost of LASIK surgery generally ranges from $2,000 to $3,000 per eye, depending on the clinic, the surgeon’s experience, and the technology used. This means you could expect to pay between $4,000 and $6,000 for both eyes.

At first glance, that might seem like a steep investment—but when you factor in the long-term cost of glasses, contacts, contact solution, and appointments, LASIK often pays for itself over time.

Many clinics also offer financing options, making it easier to spread the cost over time. During your consultation, ask about monthly payment plans that could fit your budget.

Is LASIK Covered by Insurance in Canada?

In most cases, LASIK is not covered by provincial health insurance or private plans. That’s because it’s considered an elective procedure — it improves quality of life but isn’t medically necessary.

However, you may be able to claim LASIK as a medical expense on your income tax return. Always check with your insurance provider or tax advisor to see what’s available to you.

Is LASIK Painful?

One of the most common concerns people have is whether LASIK hurts. The good news? LASIK is a painless procedure for most patients.

Before the surgery, your eyes will be numbed with anesthetic drops. You may feel some pressure during the procedure, but it should not be painful. After the surgery, some people experience mild burning, dryness, or light sensitivity—but this usually subsides within a few hours to a few days.

Prescription eye drops and post-operative care instructions will help keep you comfortable during the healing process.

What Is Recovery Like?

Most patients notice clearer vision within 24 hours, and many are back to work the next day. Your eyes will continue to heal and stabilize over the next few weeks. It’s normal to have some fluctuations in vision and light sensitivity during this time.

You’ll be asked to avoid rubbing your eyes, swimming, or using eye makeup for a short period, and follow-up appointments are typically scheduled to monitor your progress and support optimal healing.

Is LASIK Worth It After 40?

If you’re over 40, you might be wondering if LASIK is still a good idea. The answer depends on your specific vision needs.

Around this age, many people begin to experience presbyopia, a natural loss of near vision that affects reading and close-up tasks. While LASIK can correct distance vision, it won’t stop presbyopia. However, some patients choose monovision LASIK, where one eye is corrected for distance and the other for near vision.

If you’re considering LASIK in your 40s or beyond, your eye doctor can help determine whether it’s the right option for you—or whether another treatment might be more suitable.

Am I a Candidate for LASIK?

You may be a good candidate for LASIK if you:

  • Are over 18 with stable vision for at least a year
  • Have nearsightedness (up to -12 diopters), farsightedness (up to +6 diopters), or astigmatism (up to 7.5 diopters)
  • Have healthy corneas and overall good eye health

People with thin corneas, certain eye diseases, or unstable vision may not be suitable candidates. A comprehensive eye exam is the best way to determine your eligibility.

Is LASIK Right for You?

LASIK has helped millions of people see clearly without relying on glasses or contacts. With advanced laser technology, fast recovery, and a strong track record of success, it’s no surprise that many Canadians are choosing this life-changing procedure.

While the upfront cost may feel high, it’s often a worthwhile investment in the long run—especially if you consider the daily convenience and potential savings on eyewear.
